Mimoco Announces Winners from 2010 Infectious™ x MIMOBOT® Design Challenge: Unmasked

Six Community-Designed characters join the MIMOBOT USB flash drive collection in 2011

(BOSTON – September 7, 2010) – Mimoco (www.mimoco.com), creators of the MIMOBOT® line of pop-art infused USB flash drives, announces the winning designs from the 2010 Unmasked design challenge with partner Infectious (www.infectious.com), makers of electronics skins and skateboard decks. The top designs in the competition include one grand prize winner, two runners up, and three honorable mention designs. Each of the winners will have their designs produced as runs of MIMOBOT USB flash drives to join the MIMOBOT collection in early 2011, alongside Mimoco’s Star Wars™, Hello Kitty™, and Artist Series flash drive lines.

The challenge was inspired by Mimoco’s Star Wars™ MIMOBOT Series that includes such characters as Darth Vader Unmasked and Stormtrooper Unmasked, employing removable helmet caps that reveal the characters faces and USB flash drive plugs beneath. Unmasked MIMOBOT characters sometimes feature alternate faces hiding beneath the helmet for an added dimension of customer surprise. For instance, one in six units may feature a chase variant face that is more rare than the standard design.

“Following up on our last design challenge with Infectious, we couldn’t be happier with the response and results for the Unmasked challenge. To our unsurprising delight, Infectious’ community of talented artists and designers rallied around the theme of our MIMOBOT with removable helmet,” said Mimoco CEO, Evan Blaustein. ”Choosing the final designs from such a capable pool was not an easy feat, so we boosted the winners’ pool to produce not three, but six winning flash drive designs for the series debut early next year.”

The entrants brought varied imaginings, from electronic geishas to mad motorcycle drivers, fierce ninjas to giant robots, smiling sushi to lost monkeys in space, and hundreds of other ideas to the drawing board. Winning design, “No Face Dave” by American designer David Galvan, is the MIMOBOT that won’t stay dead. Beneath the cap, his skeleton face with dangling eyeball and blue tongue, or the pink-tongued alternate skinless zombie face is revealed. Once masked, Dave has a cheesy smile, eyebrow ring, tattooed arms, and baggy jeans. In addition to having his design created into a MIMOBOT, David also takes home a prize pack and $1,000 cash for the grand prize.

Runner up, “Mimoodoo” by Croatian designer Ivana Štrukelj is a tanned native schooled in the voodoo arts. Wearing only a skeleton mask, leaf skirt, and bones in his hair, he looks tough — but under his scary cute mask, his sweet face is puckered into a kiss. Second runner up, “Princesses des Fruits: Wendy Baby” by French artist Cerise, loves cherries, teddy bears, and everything pink. Unmasked, her innocent smile shows off one tooth and wide eyes. Both Ivana and Cerise’s designs are joining Mimoco’s line in 2011.

The three honorable mentions that are also being created into MIMOBOTS include “Amazing Bot” by Argentinean designer Diego Vaisberg, “Bayoboide” by Eduardo Flores of Austin, Texas, and “Osoneitor-bot” by Jonathan Costa of Caracas, Venezuela.
