Describe your style in one sentence:
Clean, simple, to the point with a dash of humor every now and then. Negative space abounds.
Can you share a bit about the piece and how you conceived it?
My concept was that blogging allows people from all over the planet to connect. My first design was a flower with the WordPress logo as the stigma and various countries flags as the leaves. The flags, though simple on its own, were really busy looking when together so that idea was scratched. However, from the Wordpress logo as a seed capsule idea, I came up with the dandelion concept with the seeds being Mac keyboards spreading the goodness that is blogging.
What does blogging mean to you and how does it effect your life?
Blogging to me is being able to express your opinions without fear of restrictions. I actually run a blog myself (on WordPress of course :P) originally as just a place to express my thoughts. Soon, I found out that people from all over the world were reading it and that makes me really happy. I also read and draw inspiration from blogs by other people on a daily basis too.
Describe your blog and tell us about an interesting recent post:
It’s kinda strange, but I run an Asian cinema blog where I talk about my thoughts on various movies or drama series in Asia. It’s called Rokku Ramu, which is how you say my name in Japanese. I recently reviewed a 2008 Korean movie called A Man Called Superman!. It’s about a mentally delusional man who thinks he’s Superman and goes around helping people. I definitely learned a lot from this movie.
Who/what are your creative influences?
I’m a fan of Paul Rand’s design. It’s very whimsical yet very expressive at the same time. I also love looking at pop art from Japan. I used to read-up on it from a blog called Ping Mag but it closed down not too long ago. I generally draw influence from nature and my surroundings if the project allows me to do so.
What’s the first picture you can remember drawing as a child?
I was in 1st grade and doodling away when the doodles ended up looking like a dog. Complete accident, but I was ecstatic. I love those happy accidents in art and especially with graphic design.
If your art was music, what would it sound like?
I would hope that my art creates a very peaceful, ambient feeling (because that’s what I love listening to). Probably artists like Vienna Teng, Duffy, Adele, and Oren Lavie.
What art do you have on your walls?
I actually don’t have any art on my walls. I feel I’ll start to imitate it if I see it all the time.
What websites do you check out regularly?
Infectious of course! Gotta check out my competitors regularly! I’m actually quite a news junkie. Usually Yahoo! and my Blogline account will fill me in on the world’s events.
What are your vices/guilty pleasures?
Singing karaoke like my life depends on it and I also get weak in the knees whenever someone mention sushi.
If you had to change careers, what would be next?
Beside art, I love learning Japanese. I’d like to be a J-pop singer :)
Are there any upcoming shows or projects you’d like to share?
Not really. I’m just a meager graphic design student. If anyone would like me to design something for them, don’t hesitate to contact me!
