Describe your style:
Circumlinear.
What’s the name of your Infectious art pieces?
All Things Untitled.
Tell us a little bit about the pieces and the inspiration behind them.
Inspiration tends to be undefinable, or at least it should be. You just sort of go with what you’re feeling when you get to going.
How did you come up your name – are you a big Dr Who fan?
Dr Who indeed, I love those Dalek guys.
How did you come up with the Space Monkey character?
By random happenstance. It was an amalgamation of Lord knows what.
Why don’t you tend to give your artwork a title?
Ambiguity is king.
How did your collaboration with Jon Spencer, The Melvins and David Yow creating soundtracks for your Purge of Dissidents DVD come about?
Tom Hazelmyer is a good friend of mine. He owns Amphetamine Reptile Records in Minneapolis for years now. It was his idea. He lined up all the musicians, as he’s friends with all the folks on the Apod soundtrack.
How much of you is reflected in your Space Monkeys? You had a pretty bad accident with your head getting punctured by a wooden stake when your were young. A lot of your Space Monkey characters have bandages around their heads. Is there some autobiography going on in your work?
Somewhat. My work is a larger biography of humanity, which of course I’m a part of.
Can you remember any of other of the characters or subject matters that you drew obsessively when you were a kid?
I mainly drew superheroes and tanks.
How did your incredibly precise technique evolve?
Lots of practice…
Name three bizarre/inspirational things that surround you in your studio.
I keep my studio bare of distraction.
What spurred the move from Brooklyn to North Carolina?
Just a change of scenery… City living gets old after a while.
What car or vehicle would you love to see you art on?
A 1968 Triumph TR4A IRS.
If you had to choose three people who you could take a bunch of spray cans and go out and paint with – who would they be?
Mike Giant, Mike Giant and Mike Giant.
Has Mike ever tattooed you?
Mike is my good friend. We met years ago through friends in the Skateboard community and started painting together from time to time. I only get tattooed by friends. So Mike’s on that list. He’s good…
If you had to change careers, what would be next?
A politician.
Are there any upcoming shows or projects you’d like to share?
Nothing really, I’m laying low for a while.
