By request... A Sneak Preview of Upcoming Art: Cey Adams!
|
A couple days ago Hoffman requested that we give everyone more insight in how we select new artists and their work when they come in from outside the submission/design challenge process. So, as a little experiment, we figured we share with you an artist we are currently in discussions with and some of the work he has been preparing with us… Cey Adams. If you don’t already know Cey, he is an institution in the world of Hip Hop art and design, having been part of Rush artist management, Def Jam Records and the Drawing Board. If you’re familiar with The Beastie Boys, Run DMC, De La Soul, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Dave Chapelle (and many other artists), then you are already familiar with Cey’s work. Here are some links if you’d like to learn a little more about Cey: www.Ceyadams.com We’ve already gone through a round or two of design discussions with Cey and we decided it would be great to have him introduce some more typographic work into the collection. Here are four pieces he’s put together. We’ll probably only include two, maybe three pieces. Cey should be joining us here in the discussion. We’d love thoughts, questions, constructive criticism and as always…compliments :). If taking this approach works well for the community and the artists, we’ll start doing more and more of it. tim

Really liking the work! – I wasn’t familiar with Cey’s work before this – but a really great addition to your collection of artists |

I hope the following doesn’t sound harsh but here goes… I’m all for typographic art, in fact I really like it when everything works out. For this everything is looking more like a collage of different typeface on a color background. Some are particularly hard to see like the red and black. So my biggest concern is that there is no aim in the design or exploration of type. |

These are great. I agree with above that the black and green would look best with the iPhone. I think the blue would look good too, actually. Great images and a successful use of typography, I think. |

I agree with el_square. If these were all custom typefaces and hand-illustrated letters I would say different .. bu it seems like I can go thu and see typefaces that I recognize. But to each his own. |

I agree with el_square, too. I think it’s tough to tell how this type of design will work without viewing a mockup, however. The lower-left portion of the red design is tough to see. |
