also doesn't make a lot of conceptual sense. why is the sailors brain coming out of his head?

You would be better off if you began with a pencil and paper. Your shapes would have a less manufactured feel. It took me a year to get away from vector, so believe me, I know. Anything drawn by hand will automatically have more character.

When you illustrate, or design anything, start with an idea. Write down what you want to say to people, even if it's going to be a doodle. Over time, it'll become second nature. This idea here could be expanded so much. Maybe you would want to tell us a bit about zombie sailors, and show an aircraft carrier deck full of them approaching us. No where to go but jump off ship in the middle of the deep, dark ocean.
Once you start designing, then you think about actual design elements. Contrast of shapes, contrast of sizes, values, textures. If you want to make your characters feel alive, you use the 13 principles of animation in one way or another. Then after your drawing (yeap, always best to draw in pencil first and then scan) is done, think about color (which is a whole new world due to color theory, harmony and application).
That should get you going, even if you just wanted to doodle!

i agree with everyone here ... i think you should give it a story to make people think about it and don't forget it .. .. how about adding a background to the design that could be war and bums and exploding everywhere???

i think it's a little too simple on it's own.
